The battle for Mount Diablo’s name (and soul), Part II

How to take the “devil” out of “Mount Diablo”? Rename it after President Ronald Reagan, of course, declares Arthur Mijares. A pious Christian, Mijares, of Oakley, believes “Diablo,” the Spanish word for devil, is “derogatory and profane” and proposed the name change to the United States Board on Geographic Names.

This is his second try to rename Contra Costa County’s 3,849-foot-high mountain after Reagan, who died on June 5, 2004. During Mijares’ first campaign in 2005, he told the Chronicle:

“When I look at that mountain, I see beauty, an entity that was not created by the devil. The devil does nothing but rob, cheat, steal and kill. That is his nature. I’ve known about this for years, but I’ve now decided it is time to act.”

His initial request was denied because he was told honorees must be dead for at least five years. Undaunted, Mijares suggested Mount Kawukum, which he said meant “laughing mountain, everywhere seen.” Kawakum is apparently a fictitious word, according an official interviewed by the Chronicle. He also suggested Mount Yahweh, Mount Miwok or Mount Ohlone.

The mountain’s demonic moniker stems from an incident involving the Spanish troops around 1805. Soliders who were hunting for Native American runaways came across a village of Chupcans. They surrounded the village at a willow thicket, but the Chupcans mysteriously escaped, so the Spaniards dubbed the area “Monte del Diablo” or “Thicket of the Devil.” “Monte” was later misinterpreted as mountain and as time passed, tales of “evil spirits” and a Satanic sighting by a priest emerged.

In the unlikely event Mijares gets his way, the promontory would join a long roster of commemorations for the Great Communicator, including a peak in New Hampshire formerly known as Mount Clay.

Downieville Classic!

January 17th, 2010 stone 6 comments

Who’s in with me?  Set the smart phone calendars for 2/19 at 8pm PST.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING 2010 EVENT!!!!!
After some mental hardship and several lengthy meetings with Downieville residents, local business owners, County Planners, wildlife biologists, hydrologists, Forest Service Rangers and Congressional Representatives (that’s right, the Feds are involved, because this race is damned important to our Country) the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has secured a special-use permit to operate the Downieville Classic in both 2010 and 2011.

In observance of this magnificent achievement, we would like to announce that Santa Cruz Bicycles is back as title sponsor of the event. Mike Ferrentino, Santa Cruz Bicycles marketing guru declares, “We are equal parts proud and honored to be returning to the Downieville Classic as title sponsor. Our relationship with this event goes all the way back to it’s roots, not long after we started out as a company. Our employees come to Downieville on vacation, or engineers come here to test bikes and ideas, and we consider this to be our “home” race.”
“The scope of this event – days of fun in the summer Sierras built around a truly demanding race for bikes and riders alike – is all-encompassing. It tests your climbing legs, your stamina, your handling skills, your tires, your suspension, your luck, and most likely your liver. There’s nothing else like it. And that’s a big part of the reason we keep coming back. Well, that, and they feed us real well…”

While we’re making announcements, we would also like to make known that registration for the Cross Country and All-Mountain races will open February 19th at 8:00pm. Right here, using www.active.com.

One more tidbit of information, and this is probably the most important to us organizers of the event, is that The Saddle Tramps have confirmed for Saturday July 10 at the Downieville Fire House.

Killer Diablo summit ride with the 29er rigid ss on Sunday the 3rd, followed by a great day at Kirkwood on Monday the 4th.  Sometimes I forget how nice a place the Bay Area can be from an outdoor activity perspective.  Endless possibilities within a 3-4 hour drive.

Great times Ja (Double Down) and T-Stone.  Hopefully we will get some more snow here in the near future.

Missing tooth

Missing tooth

That’s the re-adopted anthem’s drivetrain…just found out from the buyer that a tooth was missing.  I’ll bet five bucks it busted off at Del Valle, Stone was there, when I busted the chain on a bad shift.
