Boggs IV Race Report – Awesome!

March 29th, 2009 stone 9 comments

Boggs IV was yesterday.  Ja Mon and I raced – here’s the race repot:

Early wake up call – 5am at my house.  After a 2+ hour drive, we arrive in Cobb, CA.  Drive up the fireroad to the campsite/starting gate to find the other 400 racers getting ready.  We had plenty of time to prepare which was great – nothing worse than being late to a race.

After a trip to the john, I take my place at the starting line.  We decided I would ride first – after a quick hello to Bobby McMullen, I was off to a lung bursting sprint up the fireroad.  What I would soon find out, this was basically to get the hole shot for the single track entrance.  Needless to say, I didn’t get the hole shot.   It was ok though – going to be a long day in the saddle.

Lap distance was 8.53 miles by my calculation.  I get back to the transition area to find Ja ready to go.  I forgot to set my GPS – my guess was around 55 minutes or so.  So it was to my surprise that Ja came rolling back through the transition area in 29 min.  Good thing I was ready to go…come to find out he may have missed a turn on the course.  Either that, or the Anthem was money well spent.

So overall, Team DME did 7 laps.  Weather was perfect, the vibe was super cool up there – people were cool to let you pass if necessary, as well as polite when passing us.  I ended up riding my Blur all 4 loops.  I probably could have ridden the Stumpjumper – there were people out there on hardtails.  But it was rocky in spots, and overall just a super fun course.  Much more enjoyable on the BLT.  We could have done another lap (or maybe even 2) but due to time constraints (having to drive the 2+ hours home), we called it quits after 7.  Drank a few beers, packed up the truck and took off.

All in all – absolute killer race.  With that said, I think next year will call for camping either Friday or Saturday night…or both.  Make a weekend out of it.  Driving up and back on the same day makes for a long one.  Plus it appeared that the campground was going to be partying last night – New Belguim was out with kegs, campfires were already going…good times I imagine.

But yeah – Boggs will be an annual event for me going forward.  Well run race, great course, great vibe, and awesome location.  Not going to lie – if I was to camp all weekend – I would put it up there alongside Downieville as an annual event.  Let’s make sure DME is there next year!

Boggs – any tips out there?

March 26th, 2009 stone 1 comment

Craig – you’ve raced before I believe.  Let me in on any tips for Saturday:

What to eat?  What to wear?  Bring a change of riding clothes?  What to do in between laps?  How to set up the base camp (truck)?  Any other tidbits of info that would help us out would be awesome.

I’m planning to bring both the BLT and the Stumpy.  Right now my plan is to ride the Blur the first lap, test the course, then possibly ride the Stumpy after that depending on the technical level.  Thoughts?

Armstrong breaks collarbone

Armstrong crashes out of Spanish race

Lance Armstrong crashed hard in Monday’s opening stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y León and was transported by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Palencia, Spain.

Race organizers and the Astana team doctor confirmed that the seven-time Tour de France champion had broken his right collarbone after Armstrong underwent an X-ray at a hospital in the city of Valladolid.

“Lance suffered a fracture of the middle third of the right collarbone as well as some bruises on his right hip and arm,” said team doctor Pedro Celaya, who was with Armstrong at the hospital.

Armstrong left the hospital Monday evening and said he was “miserable.”

“It has never happened before, I feel very disappointed,” he told reporters as he left the hospital. “I feel miserable right now so I have to relax a few days.”

He nodded when asked if he would return to the United States, telling reporters his participation in the Giro d’Italia in May “will be very complicated.”

Downieville AM is on!

March 16th, 2009 craig 5 comments

I was one of the “lucky” ones to get in to the Downieville All Mountain … I registered within a minute of it opening, but I keep hearing reports of others who didn’t get in … really could have done without the climb, especially this year, but it’s a good excuse for me to start pedaling again … at least to get some semblance of fitness before early July. Hopefully my calf will cooperate.

JDub is also in with me for the AM … I expect that I’m going to get shelled in both legs but hey, I have plenty of excuses. :)   Not sure what bike I’m going to ride yet–hopefully the RFX will be built by then but since I have to do the climb I am leaning toward riding the Blur.

Sounds like Ja is in for the XC … Stone did you register? I’m guessing that you should do so early this year … the XC sold out last year eventually.
